The National Football League (NFL) is the highest level of professional American football in the United States. The NFL is composed of 32 teams, divided equally between the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC). The NFL is one of the four major professional sports leagues in North America, and the highest professional level of American football in the world. The NFL's 18-week regular season runs from early September to early January, with each team playing 17 games and having one bye week. Following the conclusion of the regular season, seven teams from each conference advance to the playoffs, a single-elimination tournament culminating in the Super Bowl, played between the champions of the NFC and AFC.

The NFL was formed in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association (APFA) before renaming itself the National Football League for the 1922 season. The NFL agreed to merge with the American Football League (AFL) in 1966, and the first Super Bowl was held at the end of that season; the merger was completed in 1970. Today, the NFL has the highest average attendance (67,591) of any professional sports league in the world and is the most popular sports league in the United States.


The NFL is governed by a board of directors made up of one representative from each club. The commissioner, who is elected by affirmative vote of two-thirds or more of the members, serves as the chief executive officer of the league. The current commissioner is Roger Goodell, who has held the position since 2006.


Each NFL team is required to have a primary home stadium in which they play their home games. The stadiums have a capacity of at least 50,000 people, with some teams playing in venues that can hold over 80,000 spectators. The Dallas Cowboys' AT&T Stadium and the New York Giants' and Jets' MetLife Stadium are currently the largest stadiums in the league, with a capacity of over 80,000.


The NFL regular season begins in early September and ends in early January. Each team plays 17 games during the regular season, with one bye week for every team. The schedule is made up of games against divisional opponents, games against teams in the same conference but not in the same division, and games against teams from the other conference. At the end of the regular season, the team with the best record in each division, as well as two wild card teams from each conference (the two teams with the best records that did not win their division) advance to the playoffs.


The playoffs consist of three rounds of single-elimination games, leading to the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl is played on the first Sunday in February and is the culmination of the NFL season. The winning team is awarded the Vince Lombardi Trophy, named after the legendary coach who led the Green Bay Packers to victory in the first two Super Bowls.


The NFL is known for its high-flying offenses and hard-hitting defenses, and the league has produced some of the most legendary players in the history of sports. Players like Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, and Lawrence Taylor are considered among the greatest to ever play the game. The league also has a strong tradition of dynasties, with teams like the Pittsburgh Steelers, San Francisco 49ers, and New England Patriots winning multiple Super Bowls over a period of several years.


The NFL is also known for its intense rivalries, with many teams having longstanding grudges against one another. Some of the most famous rivalries in the league include the Green Bay Packers vs. the Chicago Bears, the Pittsburgh Steelers vs. the Baltimore Ravens, and the Dallas Cowboys vs. the Washington Redskins.
